Former speaker Peggy Weil has been working on this great idea of organizing a contest called "Heads Up" what challenges people to help heighten the sense of emergency with regard to sustaining our planet with the use of data visualisations in public space. She presented her thoughts last year at PICNIC, and has now just launched the call for submissions (Go Peggy!). I am not very optimistic with regards to a path forward that is sustainable. I'm afraid we may be headed nose deep into the trough.

It's Friday, the week before Picnic and I just finished a one week training for data-driven journalism with people from German newspapers. Learned a bit about the barriers that are keeping the non-coders from using data.
Essentially it is not the complexity of the tools, it's the missing experience, combined with missing orientation and too many (not to few) options. My guess: If we want people to work and play with data, we should sit down and make usage of data analysis and data visualization even easier than it is today.
