During the wonderful Catapulta Fest in Oaxaca, PICNIC Mexico organized several activities around social entrepreneurship, including a colorful PICNIC Marketplace with existing and starting social businesses from Mexico.
PICNIC Mexico worked together with local, Mexican social entrpreneurs that are active in the area around Oaxaca. Here follows a short selection of these extraordinary entrepreneurs:
The Sandals of Tlacolula
We had the pleasure of meeting the lovely Graciela who is part of a group of women that design and produce wonderful sandals in a town called Tlacolula (not far away from Oaxaca city). The ladies make the colorful sandals by hand and the work allows them to provide in their own livelihood and that of their families. A wonderful project that found quite some following among the female visitors of Catapulta Fest and the PICNIC Mexico team (we are all the proud owners of a pair of unique and lovely sandals 😉

Micologica is a network of edible and medicinal mushroom producers that all work in the area of Oaxaca. The mushrooms are bought by the overarching Micologica which provides a guaranteed revenue to the producers. At the Marketplace the lovely Johan and Josefina represented the network. In addition to some of the mushrooms (obviously), they also brought fresh, sweet cake that was made from mushroom flower, made from unsold produce. Delicious! Do check out their Facebook page to see what else you can do with mushrooms.
Manuel Silva Coache studied law in Mexico and was concerned about the high level of recidive among criminals. Looking for a way out, he learned inmates to make shopping bags based on traditional weaving techniques and decorative patterns. He sells the bags and the revenue flows back to the inmates. But more importantly Manuel wants the makers to be able to start a new live, outside of the criminal ecosystem, making a living by producing the bags, or finding other skills. Take a look at the wonderful bags at Manuel’s Facebook page here.
In addition to these amazing social entrepreneurs, the PICNIC Mexico Marketplace was also honored to also host the just selected youngsters from Unreasonable Mexico, an incubator program for Mexican, social entrpreneurs. They brought the spark and excitement of very early startups and embodied the promising future of social business in Mexico!
