Green Watch demo at PICNIC

The "Green Watch", conceived by FING under the Cities 2.0 programmed witll be presented during the Ecomap Lab that will take place at PICNIC '09.

The “green watch” comprises a watch and two environmental sensors (ozone, noise) that regularly broadcast data via a mobile phone to an open platform called Citypulse which receives stores and makes measure data available and anonymous. Data can then be used freely in order to be shown on maps, used in models, etc.

Introduction to the project

The project la montre verte / Citypulse was conceived under the programme Cities 2.0 of Fing (Fondation internet nouvelle generation). The aim is to multiply by 1000 the number of environmental sensors in the city, while encouraging people’s implication in measuring environmental indices, thus associating them directly to building a sustainable city.

The “green watch” comprizes a watch and two environmental sensors (ozone, noise). Data are regularly broadcasted via a mobile phone to an open platform called Citypulse which receives stores and makes measure data available and anonymous. Data can then be used freely in order to be shown on maps, used in models, etc..

15 prototypes of the “montre verte” have been tested in May and June 2009 by residents of the 2nd arrondissement of Paris (Digital District) and also during the event Futurs en Seine in Paris, by highschool students of Montreuil (Maison Populaire/ Collège Jean Moulin), by researchers in the Cité des Sciences et de l’Industrie and by visitors of the wikiplaza, place de la Bastille. Maps made from data collected by these beta-testers are available on the website http://lamontreverte.org/en/

  • Only 10 public sensors measure air quality in Paris!
  • Co-produce environmental measures with citizens
  • Imagine new urban services
  • Add a playful, aesthetic and sensitive dimension to the objective of sustainable cities

In many cities in the world, projects tend to involve citizens in environmental measures as a complement to "high resolution" measures such as those of AIRPARIF. The “montre verte / Citypulse” is part of this move where the citizenship dimension is obvious, and it feeds it in three ways:

  • An approach to product and associated services design, in order to make the environmental measure a daily and familiar action
  • The gathering of public territorial actors, companies, researchers and associations, to make sure that the project enhances knowledge and debates on the Urban Environment without opposing official measures to that of the citizens’
  • The opening of the device, via the platform CityPulse which will host other measures from other physical devices

What is it all about?

The experiments that will take place should enable:

  • To test the techniques and architectures used
  • To make the Citypulse platform lively and make possible use of data for different actors: public institutions, researchers, artists, businesses, activists …
  • To produce and share feedback while keeping in mind developments of the project
