At a packed room in the Transformer Room at the Westergasfabriek, full with VIP guests and NOS television cameras, the Dutch Postcode Lottery and PICNIC announced the winner of this year's Green Challenge.

The four finalists including a Swiss and three American entrepreneurs spent a grueling day full of presentations and interviews with jury members and press at PICNIC in Amsterdam.

During the selection process, the preliminary jury divided the entries into five categories: energy, design/cradle to cradle, IT, mobility and lifestyle. This allowed for a better overview of the large number of entries, making comparison easier.

  • Nicky Gavron (Member London Assembly)
  • Liesbeth van Tongeren (Executive Director, Greenpeace Netherlands)
  • Jim Walker (Chief Operating Officer and co-founder, The Climate Group)

Lodewijk Asscher - Deputy Major of Amsterdam announced the winner in front of a packed audience at PICNIC 08. He also got to announce that there would not only be a winner but a runner up prize of 100,000 euros.

The runner up is Capra J'neva and partner Emilie Fetscher from VerandaSolar of the United States with their invention for easy-to-use consumer solar panels.

And the winner of the PICNIC Green Challenge 2008 and 500,000 euros from the Dutch Postcode Lottery is .... Eben Bayer and Gavin McIntyre, from Greensulate an inventor team from the United States, offering sustainable ecological alternatives to conventional synthetic building materials.
