In this special, research staff members of INHolland School of Communication, Media and Music wil query challenges and threats to innovation in the media and entertainment industries. There will be three viewpoints on innovation. From a production perspective, Karel Koch and Wes Wierda will highlight key conditions for innovative creative work in cross-media development, a.o. in the music industry. European trends provide a second perspective. As a neo-liberally flavoured venture, aimed primarely at the expansion of a common market, Eurocrats tend to favour traditional modes of production, distribution and consumption over new forms of co-creation in the cross media world. The recently appointed professor of creative industries Bart Hofstede will sketch some of the risks and opportunities that derive from EU state support and intellectual property policies. Those formerly known as the audience are central to the third perspective. Skylla Janssen will show that engaging audiences in commercial content development is only then profitable when older rules of media production are observed. Professor of media, culture and citizenship Joke Hermes will offer reflection on co-creation as civic research: the development of innovative and sustainable forms of audience research. Dean Mir Wermuth will chair discussion and debate.
