PICNIC Green Challenge Finalist
Finalist: Damian O’Sullivan, Solar Lampion
“’Designer uses available solar technique and created beautiful lampion.’ Most solar lamps today are of the type that you ‘plant’ in your garden and then leave unattended. They store energy during the day and release it in the form of light at night, which is nice. But what if we could store the sun’s energy during the day and release it at nightfall whenever we needed it. This would allow us to bring the light with us, into the home at nightfall to read a book or eat a meal. More evolutionary than revolutionary, the Solar Lampion is a portable lamp that can be carried in and out of the house: just like we used to carry candles around the house at night. Furthermore, the Solar Lampion makes a maximum aesthetic use of the solar cells that spiral around the light construction in the manner of an organic pine cone. In terms of design, the overall shape and dimension is based on a traditional Chinese lantern, as this is a beautiful example of an archetypical light source.”
