PICNIC Green Challenge Finalist

Finalist: Michel Smit, The Sustainable Dance Club

“'Change the world by clubbing.' By making clubbing sustainable, the Sustainable Dance Club will inspire the youth to adopt a sustainable lifestyle. It develops new ways of powering clubs and the way clubs run their business. Without telling the clubs and club goers what not to do, but by showing them creative, inspiring and sustainable alternatives. Some examples are the electricity-generating dance floor, the personal cup and Trees for Dance. Per year, a club for 1000 people uses on average 200 times the energy that a household of four people uses. It uses 150 times the amount of water and produces 3000 times as much waste, while they are usually only three nights per week open. By applying available sustainable techniques as alternate powering and smart use of water, the Sustainable Dance Club can reduce the emission to approximately 50% at the moment."
