Hajo van Beijma
With a special interest in healthcare based behavior change communication it has always been one of his goals to work in Africa. When he learnt about the enormous growth of mobile telephony, especially in Africa, he got the idea of using mobile telephones to reach out to people with health and educational messages. Together with two colleagues he founded Text to Change early 2007. TTC executed more than 15 successful mHealth programs targeting over 300,000 mobile phone users with health sensitization messages in Africa and South-America. Until now mobile telephony was never been used on such a large scale and systematic manner for this purpose. Text to Change has created an uptake in HIV testing of 35% in the regions where they launch their text message based quiz. TTC is also working on mobile economic development and m-learning. TTC works in: Ghana, Malawi, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia, Bolivia, Burkina Faso, Ethiopia, Madagascar, Kenya, Peru, DRC, Cameroon, Namibia and Mali on adding value to the health, economic development and educational programs via the use of mobile phones.
