Beth Coleman
Co-founder of SoundLab Cultural Alchemy
Dr. Beth Coleman is the primary investigator of the Pervasive Media/City as Platform research and design lab at MIT, where she is an assistant professor of comparative media studies. She is a Berkman Center for Internet and Society Faculty Fellow at Harvard University and a Microsoft Research New England Research Fellow.
Coleman's work focuses on the role of a human narrative in the context of media and data engagement, with an emphasis on locative media design. As an artist, she has an extended history of international exhibition including venues such as the Whitney Museum of American Art, New Museum of Contemporary Art, and Musée d'Art Moderne Paris. She is the co-founder of SoundLab Cultural Alchemy, an internationally acclaimed multimedia performance platform.
Among her awards, she has received a Rockefeller Foundation award for New Media Arts and was an artist in residence at the Waag Society, Amsterdam.
Her book "Hello Avatar" is published by the MIT Press (fall 2011).
